Medals

Medallic Art is an interesting discipline within the Fine Art spectrum. It can be the result of a commission or be part of an artists ongoing programme of research. It can celebrate, dwell on, or damn. It can be the record of an experience, reflect contemporary times, memorialize, be a response to nature, be political, abstract, or an expression of materiality.

The medal's tool kit includes – relief, drawing, the relationship of the two sides, the potential of the rim/edge, use of text, implication of size, portability, and it’s ability to confound.

As with many disciplines – it will never take over the world, but when it is good, it takes its place with the best that Art can offer. The tendency to go for one liners and mawkishness can be its biggest pitfalls.

The British Art Medal Society is an unusual gathering of Artists, Collectors, Museum curators and Art historians. Please go to the BAMS website for more information.
